Antonio Stradivari’s “Forma B” cello model is widely regarded as one of the most important cello designs from his Cremona workshop. Used mainly between the early 1700s and the mid-1720s, this pattern introduced a refined large-bodied cello shape with long, narrow, and graceful proportions. Its design helped set a lasting standard for classical cello making and became an important reference point for later makers.
The earliest known instruments built from the Forma B mold are generally traced to around 1709, when Stradivari began using the pattern more consistently. One of the final known examples connected to this model is the 1726 “Marquis de Corberon” cello. After this period, Stradivari gradually moved toward smaller cello patterns, including the Forma B Piccola and other shorter models, bringing the original Forma B period to a close.
