Niccolò Amati’s “Forma A” cello belongs to the early Cremonese tradition of the Amati family. Used in the first half of the 17th century, this form is known for its longer body, narrow waist, and slightly broader outline when compared with later Stradivari cello models. Its shape reflects the older Italian cello style, made during a period when larger instruments were still common.
The Niccolò Amati cello dated around 1650, now associated with the Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze. This instrument bears the Medici coat of arms and was recorded in Grand Prince Ferdinando’s collection in 1700. The larger early cello form was tied to the needs of gut strings and longer vibrating lengths, before later makers gradually moved toward smaller, more manageable cello designs.
