Guarneri del Gesù’s “Il Cannone” violin belongs to the final period of his Cremona workshop. Made in 1743, this violin is known for its powerful build, deep acoustic box, and bold, resonant character. Its form is less polished than Stradivari’s refined style, with a stronger outline, expressive tool marks, and a more rugged Cremonese personality.

The 1743 “Il Cannone” became one of the most recognized violins connected to Guarneri del Gesù’s late work. Its slightly asymmetrical shape and robust construction show a different side of Italian violin making, focused on strength, depth, and projection. This instrument later became closely associated with virtuoso playing and remains an important example of Guarneri’s individual voice in violin history.
